Day 8

23 juli 2017 - Marthrown of Mabie, Verenigd Koninkrijk

Hiya!

We could have a sleep-in this morning, which was greatly appreciated. Afterwards, we had breakfast with some traditional English/Scottish things: crumpets and tatty scones. Pam had taken them from the shop for us so we could try them. Then we went to search for Pam so she could show us where the supplies where for our first task of the day: cleaning the bunkhouse which we had painted earlier this week and the other bunkhouse. We had to do this thoroughly because this weekend, there will be a wedding held here at the campsite, and all the rooms and yurts will be full. It took us longer than expected, but we still finished it before lunchtime. We also cleaned the outside tables and chairs with bleach to make them pristine again. After washing our hands and throwing our old clothing away (because it had all been decoloured by the bleach), we had some lunch. Afterwards Pam asked us to do some gardening for her, which we all agreed to happily. It was so much fun because we got a lot of creative freedom. Luckily, it also does look better (even if I do say so myself). Then we played some games again (when are we not playing games around here?) and had dinner. After dinner (while playing games, duh) a man walked up to us and told us that he’d be getting married at the campsite this weekend in the roundhouse, and that Mike had told him about our work. He said that he greatly appreciated our effort, because it all looked very good, and that he’d bought some flowers and fancy chocolates for us to show his appreciation. We all but died of cuteness right there. This was also the moment which showed me that our work really is very useful to the campsite, which was a personal goal for me.

I have to say, the tasks we did today were mostly the tasks I feel are typical for a campsite. In my personal objectives before the trip, I’d mentioned that I would like to learn what goes on in a campsite behind the scenes, and it was all I’d expected, and so much more. Cleaning out the hot tub, keeping the garden and painting the buildings were all things I hadn’t thought of, but which are definitely necessary to keep the campsite safe and clean. I also really like the people here. Many people staying at the campsite start conversations and are genuinely interested in us, which makes the experience all the nicer.
